Life Summary

Salitis, also known as Sharek or Sheshi, was the first Hyksos king to rule over parts of ancient Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period. Little is known about his early life, but he is believed to have been a West Semitic chieftain who rose to power in the Nile Delta region. According to Manetho, an ancient Egyptian historian, Salitis conquered Memphis and established his capital at Avaris (modern-day Tell el-Dab'a). His reign marked the beginning of Hyksos dominance in Lower Egypt, which lasted for over a century. The exact dates of his birth and death remain uncertain, but his rule is generally placed around the 17th century BCE.

Historical Context

The Hyksos, whose name means "rulers of foreign lands," were a group of mixed Semitic and West Asian origins who migrated into Egypt during the late Middle Kingdom. Their rise to power coincided with a period of political fragmentation and weakness in Egypt, particularly in the Delta region. Salitis's establishment of the Fifteenth Dynasty represented a significant shift in Egyptian history, as it introduced foreign rule and cultural influences, including advanced military technologies like the composite bow and chariot warfare. The Hyksos period is often viewed as a time of cultural exchange, though it also set the stage for the eventual reunification of Egypt under native rulers like Ahmose I, who expelled the Hyksos and founded the New Kingdom.

Beliefs

Salitis and the Hyksos rulers adopted many aspects of Egyptian culture, including religious practices. They worshipped Egyptian deities such as Seth, whom they associated with their own storm god, Baal. This syncretism helped legitimize their rule among the Egyptian population. However, their foreign origins and religious differences also contributed to tensions with native Egyptian rulers in Thebes, who eventually led the resistance against Hyksos rule.
